Comcast Outages

We use Comcast for internet. It's the only available service here that has any meaningful speed. We've heard great things about Sonic.com (fiber) in our Burlingame California area, but it is not available at our house so...never mind. (Simlarly named sonicnet.us is a small ISP in a couple of Wisconsin towns, an unrelated service). We have been using Comcast for some years and are overall satisfied with the service.

In the last few years Comcast has not randomly increased prices (it used to happen every year and we would complain and get the price back where it had been). We pay USD60 per month. We get over 700Mb/s download which is pretty good and the price is...acceptable.

In most of the US one company has a monopoly in any given town (it's not the same company in every town: Comcast and AT&T are the main monopolists). When a town tries to build its own fiber ethernet service the legal battles with the monopoly company are...epic. But sometimes the town succeeds (unless the local state passes a law forbidding municipal ownership!). In European countries where companies must compete and the owners of the lines are separate from the ones providing service the price of internet service is much lower.

Upload speeds are 15Mb/s which is pretty bad, but the terms of service don't allow us to host a web site here anyway, so the few needed uploads just...take a while.

You are seeing this page hosted by NearlyFreeSpeech.net since we cannot do that from home. There's no handholding from NFS but they are very reliable and the price is very reasonable.

We upgrade our Comcast Cable Modem every few years (we own it) when Comcast email says higher speeds are available with a new Docsys modem. On replacing our modem appropriately we get a substantial download speed boost, just as Comcast promised.

We check for an outage every minute or so using a python application I wrote. So outages less than 60 seconds long might not be noticed.

Comcast outages recently by month

These are outages seen at our cable modem. Meaning Comcast itself is unavailable to us.
